The Japanese have been beating the summer heat for centuries by gazing at goldfish swimming in cool water and hanging little glass bells known as fūrin. This month I’m giving away a lovely bit of Japan swag that delivers both! This handpainted bell from the Kawasaki Daishi Shrine has a slip of paper tied to the clapper, so a melodic tinkle will announce the slightest breeze.
On the last day of June, I’ll randomly pick one lucky Japanagram subscriber to get this charming chime, just in time for the summer heat. Be sure to check next month’s July Japanagram to see if you won! All Japanagram email subscribers who are signed up before June 30, 2023 are automatically entered. If you’re not yet a member of this lucky group, click this button to subscribe. It’s free!
How I pick the book giveaway winners: At the end of June, I will load all the email addresses of current Japanagram subscribers into an online random name picker and ask it to choose one lucky winner to get the goldfish fūrin. I’ll publish the winner’s email in the next Japanagram (obscured in a way so only the subscriber will be able to recognize it as their own, of course) so check your July Japanagram to see if you won!

I’m sorry to say it’s not. All the Japan swag giveaways are things I deemed worthy of precious space in my suitcase, and I handcarried them from Japan. You might be able to find something similar online, though, if you search for “furin” or “Japanese glass wind chime.”
