Japan may be the over-the-top costuming mecca of the world, but it’s also the home of Halloween’s most hilarious dress-up trend: Mundane Halloween. These revelers capture ordinary people doing ordinary things who are as nevertheless as recognizable as Godzilla, but twice as funny.
Here are some of my all-time favorites, most from the annual “Mundane Halloween” contest sponsored by DailyPortalZ (and posted on Twitter/X by @dailyportalz)

A man who accidentally shook his soda before opening it
•

Someone who put on all his Joker makeup then realizes he forgot to buy green hair spray
•

Uber delivery man surprised when resident comes out of front door despite instructions to just drop it off
•

Foreign tourist looking for a trash can
•

Elementary school student after the closing ceremony for the first semester
•

Person trying hard not to buy plastic bags
•

Person protecting herself from getting tan in midsummer
•

The school office lady who usually doesn’t stand out but is extremely active during suspicious person training
•

Foreign tourist at the Shibuya scramble crossing
•

An office worker who forgot he was wearing a mask and drank coffee
•

Person standing in line for baggage inspection at an international airport
•

Person making additional random purchases to disguise that they’re buying erotic magazines
•

Person who bought less than they thought they would
•

Person who spots a cockroach right before bed and grabs whatever he can find
•

Photographer’s assistant whose job is to make children laugh
